Material, Structure and Nanotechnology engineer

Research activities of the PhD program:
•    materials for civil and environmental engineering;
•    conservation and restoration of existing Structures including monumental Constructions;
•    structural safety in relation to natural and anthropic risks;
•    materials and analytical techniques for cultural heritages (archeological, historical, artistic, architectural);
•    polymer, ceramic and composite materials for industrial, aeronautic and biomedical applications;
•    nano-structured materials characterized by specific functional properties for industrial and  biomedical applications and for cultural heritages;
•    advanced sensors for monitoring of civil structures;
•    advanced sensor for biomedical applications;
•    experimental operational analysis of civil structures and structural health monitoring;
•    advanced materials for the production of energy, sensors, and catalysis;
•    semiconducting materials and nanotechnologies for electronics and photovoltaic;
•    engineered materials from renewable resources.
The research scholarship supported by IIT  are constrained to the following topics:
•    Neurotechnologies;
•    Photonics for the brain and the body;
•    Optogenetics;
•    Implantable and edible electronic devices;
•    Wearable devices and epidermal electronics for health monitoring;
•    Two-photon lithography for material processing and nanofabrication.
•    AI and deep learning applied to data science and data analytics for technology design.

For scholarships funded by IIT, research projects take place in close collaboration with IIT. Research activities will be also performed at the “Center for Biomolecular Nanotechnologies”, in Arnesano (Lecce).

Progetto di ricerca: The aim of my project is the optimization of 2D and 3D scaffolds for the assembly of Organ-on-Chip, to be used as biomedical devices to investigate host-pathogen interactions, as drug delivery platforms and for toxicity tests. Bio-based polymeric materials will be used, which have to be compatible with human cell lines and bacterial species that colonize the Organ-on-Chip.

Progetto di ricerca: Innovative strategies for recycling, reuse and valorization of waste materials for 3D printing applied to design. Aim: To develop innovative strategies for the recycling, reuse and valorization of materials from production waste through the design of composite materials suitable for the production of granule and/or a filament for FFF 3D printing technology produced by mixing different types of waste (wood, stone, ceramic) with a polymer matrix. Leveraging the experience developed during the 1st and 2nd level thesis work in Product Design, the designed materials, after being analyzed and characterized, will be applied for the production of objects or components to be commercialized to foster the technological development of small and medium-sized enterprises and craft workshops.

Progetto di ricerca: The aim of the research project is the development of a Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system based on Machine Learning (ML) for aerospace structures, focused on the detection of low-speed impacts and the possible damage caused by them. After the creation of a dataset of real impacts in the laboratory on which to train and test the model, a mobile system to run in flight will be implemented.
